Dreaming of Opening a Canine Gym? Part III

It’s a Sign!

One marketing tool in your tool bag is your signage.

“It’ll Cost You”

Sometimes your Landlord designates the exact sign design. Be sure to read your lease. When I negotiated my lease, I made sure that I could use the existing ‘cabinet’ sign. Why? I had no fondness for the shape of the existing cabinet. I did, however, want to avoid spending $7,000 that was unnecessary. That’s right. If I had to change the existing box to channel sign lettering, think of the saying “It’ll Cost You”.

What’s the Visibility in your Location?

Do you need something bright and flashy to catch the eye of potential “drive by” customers? Are you in a shopping mall where people strolling along, window shopping will see your sign? I don’t have either of these “free” marketing demographics. I AM lucky to have a very busy bike shop (so excited – BIKES!! – sorry, that’s for another blog) right next door. Most biking dames n dudes have dogs. And a very busy Mexican restaurant across the path.  And, who would think the Earth Treks Climbing Gym right behind me would have 500 climbers/day?? Many of those climbers have dogs.

My potential drive by customers have to turn 3 corners before they might even see my sign. Thus I’d consider visibility of my sign as “directional”, only to be seen in the last several hundred feet.

Use a Graphics Designer if you know your Artistic Talents – or Lack Thereof!

After deciding style and visibility, you can have lots of fun designing your business sign. Or not, if you are me. Do you want your logo to be a part of the sign? What colors do you want? Will your sign be backlit? It was easy for me to know that I needed a Graphics Designer. Look at my initial poor attempt! Am I hearing you say, ‘Keep your day job working with dogs, Kerry!”

Now check out my fun sign – created by an amazing Graphics Designer. I asked to have the graphics inserted onto a photo so I could see the sign before it’s actually created by the sign company. The cabinet stays intact. And we incorporated the Logo I’ve wanted to use for years  – a goofy dog holding his leash, ready to have fun!
